Italy 2018 – Varenna to Milan

Before departing Varenna and the Lake Como area, we take one last early morning walk through the Giardino Botanico di Villa Monsatero. We packup and leave our bags at the hotel, the Hotel Royal Victoria; it's been a fantastic home base, very comfy, great views. The entrance to the Monastero is just down the road. The bright, horizontal morning sun, with the dark, thick cypress and shaggy palms makes the photo work difficult, but some of images appear to turn out okay; and there's lots of them.

The last few hours in this little town that we've made our lake-side home. Though full of tourists, it's not over-crowded or flooded by cruise ship hordes; so easy to get to know and very relaxing.

Then, back on the train to Milano Centrale; the contrast could not be more severe. Away with the serenity and calm of Varenna, and thrown into the heroic scale and chaos of this monument to facism: so crowded, and rushed, and no signage for the metro or the elevators. We pop out of the Galleria Victorio Emanuele II, and right through the human mass gathered at the Duomo.
